Motivation as stated by Steven Reiss
What is motivation according to Prof. Dr. Reiss?
Motivation is the implementation/assertion of values, motives and goals.
What is so new, or different?
- Rejection of the models that understand motivation as mental energy
- Rejection of the models that describe motivation from reward and punishment
- Statements made in the past by psychologists and scientists are disproved scientifically and verifiably for the first time (for example Freud, Jung, Maslow etc.)
- There is a kind of revolution in thinking and what we have learned so far.
New statement by Prof. Reiss: Only the "end in itself" triggers behaviour!
- Means compared to final causes (money is a means, not a final cause)
- Intrinsic as contrasted with extrinsic motivation
- Needs in contrast to behaviour
Each of the 16 basic desires is a continuum of motivation!
- People regulate and balance the intrinsic experiences that they appreciate
- "Too much" or "too little"
- The meaning of "too much" or "too little" differs among individuals
The 16 basic desires make us individuals!
"I say that the balance of happiness neither has to be excessive nor low, but is different for every human being."
Aristoteles, Book II, Nichomachean Ethics.
